Relocations

FDNY Dispatchers are responsible for assuring adequate fire covering is provided to all neighborhoods of the City, especially when incidents are happening which will require units to operate for periods greater than 30 minutes or units will be unavailable for another assigment indefinately. Dispatchers determine their relocations based on activity Boro-wide. If a company in a certain area hasn’t had much activity, they will be a good decision to relocate. Another factor affecting relocations is commute. Sometimes it is better to move a company you know can get to the affected fire neighborhood rather quickly, because the fire sounds like it is bad enough to use all companies and possibly go to a multiple alarm incident. Training and administrative duty are other factors that affect relocation decisions. All dispatchers must be relatively knowlegable in the boro they work in to understand the challenges faced out in the field responding to and operating at incidents.
